Arkadiy Tikhonov

180 anniversary of D.K. Chernov: The effect of his discovery of iron polymorphism on the development of heat treatment processes of metals in the world

Arkadiy Tikhonov, Professor, Dr. Sci., is the well-known Russian scientist in the field of heat treatment and materials. He is the President of the Russian Society for Metal Science and Heat Treatment. In 1960 he graduated the Magnitogorsk Mining-Metallurgy Institute. Since 1968 he worked at AVTOVAS car factory as the head of the thermal department and then as science advisor. A.K. Tikhonov is the Honored Engineer of Russia, Honored Inventor of the USSR, full member of the Russian and International Engineering Academies, member of the Supreme Engineering Council of the Russian Federation, and of the Italian Association of Metallurgists. Since 2015 he is a Fellow of the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE) In 1999 A.K. Tikhonov organized the construction of the first memorial monument to D.K. Chernov in the city of Yalta on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the outstanding Russian scientist and metallurgist.

Stefan Hock

Case Hardening Steels: Challenging the invisible and outsmarting the unavoidable. An approach integrated along the process chain to new potentials in a mature technology 

Stefan Hock graduated in mechanical engineering with specialization in materials science and engineering in 1978, and started working in the development of amorphous metals. In 1988 he finished the thesis of Dr. rer. nat. (Ph.D.) at the Max-Planck-Institute, Stuttgart, Germany, and worked with sintered permanent magnets. From 1991 he was in charge of the Corporate Materials Technology department of ZF Friedrichshafen AG. 2011 he took the position of Director R&D of ZF Marine in Padua, Italy. Now he is retired and is Secretary General of IFHTSE.

Marcel A.J. Somers

Yu. Lakhtin’s memorial lecture: Thermochemical surface engineering of stainless steels with interstitials; symbiosis of science, technology and innovation

Marcel A.J. Somers is the Head of Section of Materials and Surface Engineering of Technical University of Denmark. He received his M.Sc. (1985) and his Doctor’s degree (1989) from Delft University of Technology (NL). After employments in industry (Philips) and an additional 7 years at Delft University of Technology, he was appointed full professor at the Technical University of Denmark in 1997, where he has headed a university group in Materials and Surface Engineering since 2000. He has co-authored about 300 contributions to journals, books and conference proceedings and is co-inventor of 10 patents. He was awarded several prizes for his research and innovation, among which the ASM European Lecturer Award (1999) and the Alex Foss gold medal (2014). He is Fellow of ASM International (2016).

Marcel Somers will be awarded with the IFHTSE Medal during the Congress.

Rolf Zenker

The electron beam can do more than surface hardening

Rolf Zenker received his doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing.) from Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt and his post-doctoral degree (habil.) from Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg TU BAF). He operated at different universities in Germany as senior researcher and associated professor as well as at industrial enterprises as head of different R&D departments and managing director. Since 2003 he has a professorship at the TU BAF. He established together with Dr.-Ing. Anja Buchwalder a research team in the field of electron beam and combined technologies at Institute of Materials Engineering. His company Zenker Consult is specialized in development of technologies and transfer, consulting as well as project management of R&D and interdisciplinary projects. He is member of several national and international associations Rolf Zenker published more than 300 contributions in scientific journals and gave about as many lectures at international conferences. He holds 53 patents. The further development of the field of EB technologies and the promotion of young scientists is particularly close to his heart.

Rolf Zenker will be awarded with the IFHTSE Fellowship during the Congress.
